Christmas

All nine kids made it here and Kevin's mom was here as well. It was a lovely day.  It was way less work than I had even five years ago since I didn't have any tiny people running around wreaking adorable havoc.

I even read a whole book yesterday!

Our stockings.  A common joke is that a father is just as surprised as anyone else when the presents are opened on Christmas. That is NOT true in our house. Kevin does the majority of the shopping for presents, and he handles 95% of the stockings.  Isn't it pretty?

There was great joy!

Big girls had to eat in the living room.  I don't think they minded. But yes, 12 people don't really fit around our table!

My parents bought me this.  It is a sand sculpture thing. I love it.  Everyone loves it.

Lydia crocheted hats for almost everyone on the family. She is diligent and gifted with crocheting.

Cocoa in our sun room. Why is she perched at the very edge of the hot tub?  I don't know.

Our snowy driveway  It doesn't look that bad.  It was worse by the road.

So that was Christmas. Now that it is the 26th, I am ready to spend a week working on various projects. We actually have two more birthdays in the next week, and I also need to think about homeschooling this coming semester.  Also, I am working on an expanded edition of one of my books.

But in the middle of projects, I intend to enjoy this season with Kevin and the children.  And I will read a few fun books!

Storm and a birthday

I am not going to blog about Christmas right now, though it was great.  But the days before Christmas were exciting too!

On Naomi's birthday, we got a couple of large boxes filled with fun foods from Kevin's sister. We had a very enjoyable lunch with little plates full of exciting tidbits. The boxes also came with fruit, which was awesome!

Naomi came over in the evening and we celebrated her birthday.  She is my firstborn, of course, and in some ways I find it impossible to believe she is in her twenties. Seems like yesterday that I held her in my arms the first time.  I am very proud of her.  I am proud of all the kids, but she and Lydia have managed to strike out as independent adults and that is a glorious thing.

Joseph allowed himself to be wrapped like a present.  Please note the incredible difference in height between Rose and Joseph.

And then the storm hit. It was a truly terrible storm.  We got a few inches of snow but the cold was intense, as was the wind.  We never lost power.  The lowest I saw the thermometer dip was -6. On Friday, it never got to zero.  But we didn't lose power and I am so thankful for that!

Snow!  Our driveway was mostly impassable for a couple of days.  Kevin did get out and got stuck coming back in. He managed to dig himself out enough to get back in the garage. Then Christmas morning, Lydia showed up bright and early and got stuck again.  Kevin and Isaac dug her out.  I think we need a snowblower :-). Seriously, we rarely get much serious snow.  It was the drifting that made it especially crazy, of course.

Random picture of one of my meals.  I avoided the grocery store like the plague at the end of last week.  Combo of Christmas and an incoming storm made things crazy.  So I was out of cucumbers.  Usually I have cucumbers in my salad. What kind of crazy, wonderful world are we in where I can get cucumbers in the dead of winter?

We have five outside cats.  The general suggestion was that people bring their outside animals inside but that didn't really work for us.  I was worried but we did prepare carefully; we have two heated cat houses and I provided a windbreak and covered one side with a blanket.  The cats very sensibly huddled inside the heated cat houses; three in one house, two in the other.  They are fine, praise God.  We also had a heated water bowl and I kept bringing out and distributing cans of wet food for the kitties.  So they made it through no problem, which was a relief.

We still have Cocoa in our sun room. She is now eager to leave but we are going to wait until the temps are better.  It is going to be in the 40's in a few days, which is kind of crazy, but that's Ohio weather for ya!

A Storm is Coming!

We will probably have a white Christmas for the first time in many years.  It is also going to be the storm of the decade in the next few days -- not because of snow, but because of cold and wind.

My parents, who live north of us, are getting a TON of snow. Like more than a foot.  But we will only get 2 to 3 inches.

However, we will have gusts up to 50 miles per hour plus temperatures plunging below zero. So that is nasty.

Thankfully we didn't have to go to the grocery store today because of course it was packed.

Right now it is 43 degrees but in 12 hours it'll be close to 0.  Ick.

Mid December

Cocoa got fixed. You can see her shaved belly. She is going to stay in the sun room for a few days longer. Then we will probably move her into the barn for a little while.  We will have a heated cat bed in there and food and water and a litter box, but it will be a bit colder than outside. AT some point, she will be ready to return to the great outdoors.

We had a pizza feast to celebrate Miriam, Joseph, and Isaac finishing the last semester of college.

We hang out in our "family room" a lot more than the living room but at this moment, the living room was full of kids reading, which makes me happy.

Kevin and Isaac took giant shrimp and rolled them in stuff and fried them. Amazingly good!

Angela made cookies for a party.  They were good.

Our three boys got haircuts. They look like a million bucks.

But the haircuts weren't a million bucks.  So that is nice.

Kevin cut their hair.

December

Rose is eight years old. When I was eight, I wanted to have long hair. I also didn't like brushing my hair. Eventually, I had such a big tangle that I had to have my hair cut.

History does, in fact, repeat itself.  Rose likes longer hair. She also hates brushing her hair, and hates it when I brush her hair. So a few days ago I got frustrated and decided to trim it a bit to make it easier to keep in order. But Rose kept wiggling and squirming and fussing and by the time I was done, her hair was pretty much butchered.  Poor Rose!  Fortunately, Kevin has the magic touch. He sat her down and tidied it up and now it is super cute. And short.

Sisters who love each other.

I think I have mentioned some neighbor dogs who come over and terrorize our cats on occasion. It is very annoying.  They are from someone we don't know so yeah, there isn't much to be done about it.  The dogs are afraid of people so we can't even spray them in the face with water or anything because as soon as we step outdoors they run for the hills.  Anyway, they scared our cats a few days ago and Cocoa, the new cat, climbed a tall tree.  I was nervous about her getting down but she did.

Here is Lydia enjoying the new kitty.  Obviously Lydia loves interesting hair.  I adore that color of red.

Cocoa has a cute little tail.

In other news, I don't have to go anywhere today which makes me very happy.  I have been running around like a nut thanks to orthodontia appointments and doctor appointments and going to the grocery store and Miriam working.  Our big girls, who are doing an admirable job of managing adulthood, have been battling sickness so on Monday, I brought four kids over and we did a whirlwind clean of their apartment.  They are on the third floor which is great for security and the view, but carrying trash downstairs requires some energy.  Both big girls have had coughs and viruses and aching bodies.  They have worked through most of that, but it is hard to keep up at home when feeling sick and going to work diligently.  Obviously they could sort it out themselves if needed, but we do have a Horde of children so yes, it was a blessing that we could run on over there and get a bunch done quickly.

Of course, compared to normal people, I am home a LOT.  But since I homeschool, I have many things that need to happen at home so yeah, when I am gone a lot, things get a little crazy.  I am also incredibly grateful for cars that get us where we want to go without fussing at us.

Last Saturday, I assisted at our church's food pantry. Twice a month we fill bags of food for anyone who needs them.  We have many people come by.  Certainly inflation is hitting some people very hard!  Many people have small children.  I am thankful that our church can help in this way.  I am thankful we have plenty of food for our own kids.

A new book of ours is being released tomorrow. It is very short (38,000 words) which makes it more a novella than a novel.  I don't know how it will be received. Usually Kevin does a bunch of marketing ahead of time but this time he has not done as much. Also, this time of year apparently a LOT of books are released.  So I am not expecting that it will be a huge success, but we will make some money and I hope it will be fun for people to read.

The three big kids still at home are finishing up their college classes this week.  Isaac continues to do very well toiling away on his college classes.  He has had finals this week, some at the local college and some online from home.  Keeping the house kind of quiet for when he is in the middle of a test is...challenging on occasion! Miriam and Joseph have fewer classes and they are not as difficult, and both are doing well.  Miriam is leaning towards engineering for a career, which I think is a good fit.  She is very artistic too and we talked about jobs that are more artistic, but she does enjoy science and math and has an inquiring mind.  So we will see how the next year work out. I am going to work diligently with her on math and chemistry this coming winter/spring.

Kevin and I are fairly enthusiastic college football fans which makes me chuckle because when I was a kid, I found football totally boring. But now I really like it.  We are University of Michigan fans and they are doing great this year, so we've been watching their games.  They are now ranked #2 in the nation, which is fun, and will be in the college football playoff.

I am proud to say I have been exercising more lately.  Kevin bought me some wireless headphones for my birthday so I can exercise on the elliptical, or punch our punching bag, or lift weights, or whatever, and watch stuff while I do it.  This is very helpful as I tend to focus a lot on discomfort while exercising unless thoroughly distracted.

One thing that is interesting about having a large family is that the kids bombard me with questions all the time. The older I get, the more I know I don't know.  I mean that.  The world is full of information and while I have a decent grasp on some stuff, and a shallow grasp on other stuff, I know I am not an expert on most things.

Today is Pearl Harbor Day and I talked to the kids about that, with the caveat that I don't know all the details of the war in the Pacific after Pearl Harbor, and how long it took for the tide to turn back toward the Allies...

I love that information is so readily available, but sometimes it is overwhelming.

It is, of course, the Christmas Season.  In the midst of all the busyness and craziness, I am remembering that the most important thing to ever happen was that my Lord was born as a baby to a virgin mother, that he grew up to preach and teach and heal, that he sacrificed himself and died on a cross to pay for my sins, that is my King and my Savior. Thank you, Lord Jesus, for coming to a fallen and broken world.

Cocoa

I mentioned in a previous blog post that I was worried about our little cat Opal, who was afraid of neighbor dogs and our cats and was generally not a happy camper.  I asked Naomi and Lydia to take her in, which they kindly did. She has adjusted well to their apartment.

The youngest two kids were sad about Opal leaving, and Rose said at some point that she "wanted another kitten."  I said, airily, that she could pray about a kitten showing up if she wanted another kitten.

Seriously, why do I do this kind of thing to myself???  :-)

Meet Cocoa!  We get lots of strays that show up at our front door since we live out on the country and there are barn cats and feral cats and all like that. We provide food and we let the strays eat and if we can catch them, we get them fixed.

But Cocoa shows every sign of being someone's indoor pet. She is very affectionate and likes people a lot. She doesn't even mind other cats very much.

I took her to the vet yesterday and she has no microchip and is not fixed. They estimate she is between 6 and 12 months old.

That means she is old enough to get pregnant, which we don't want, so we have arranged to have her fixed in a couple of weeks.

So yes, she is a beautiful little cat and very sweet and I didn't really want another little cat but the kids did and God answered so ... yeah.

She is very sweet.

(Some) Criminals are total idiots

I don't know if I have ever said this before...

content warning!  I am going to talk about actual murders!

Not graphically but I just wanted to say if that kind of thing is too upsetting, don't read further!

So I watched a bunch of episodes of a New Zealand show called Forensics, which is about murders in that country which were solved largely through scientific methods.

I find forensics interesting, and I also love New Zealand accents.

So anyway, I did find the episodes interesting, but it was depressing how incredibly stupid many of the criminals were.

Murder is wrong.  That is just...so so so obvious. You shouldn't murder anyone.  Being a soldier in war, or a policeman, or someone in authority is a different matter because I believe there can be justified killing but I'm not talking about that -- I am talking someone gets mad or wants to steal someone's else's stuff  and murders one or more people in the process.

Now if you are evil enough to plot to kill someone, then it seems obvious to me that you'd want to do it in a way which would keep you out of prison for most or all of the rest of your life. That just seems basic sense, right?

Of course murder is terrible.  I'm just saying, from a self preservation point of view, it would be sensible not to murder someone if it is almost certain that you will be caught.

Several of the murderers in question on this show (all were convicted) were stupid, but one of them was particularly idiotic.

He was the ex boyfriend of a woman and was mad that she had broken up, so he decided to murder her. (First degree -- it was planned.) So he snuck into her house, killed her, stole her phone, and started sending out bunch of messages supposedly from her claiming that she was afraid of a stalker at work.

Ok, yeah, that sounds kind of sneaky.  The idea, obviously, was it to look like she was sending messages about a stalker, and then when she was found dead, the police would go after the hypothetical stalker.

But.

He was not a strong speller and when he wrote the text messages, he included numerous spelling errors that the woman would never make.

He made a big deal about how she had told him about the stalker and that he was at her work place, but no one at work knew anything about a stalker.  Furthermore, she was very happy at work. Furthermore, her ex boyfriend HAD been stalking her and her coworkers knew that and told the police.  He had also sent her threatening messages.

So the police were all over that, of course -- they were like, ex boyfriend is probably the culprit.

And then they found a bloody fingerprint on her door, and it matched his fingerprint.

Like. Wow.

Like, dude you are so so so stupid!  You concoct this moderately elaborate plan to murder this innocent woman and LEAVE A BLOODY FINGERPRINT!

Sigh.

Of course I am very glad he was caught and convicted. Horrible man.

But it is kind, I don't know, scary -- yes, scary, that there are idiotic people out there who will commit crimes and apparently genuinely think they will get away with it in spite of all of modern technology pointing their way?

Maybe the smart criminals don't get caught.

Thanksgiving!

We had the whole gang here for Thanksgiving, which was fun.  Naomi and Lydia are adults living their own lives and while we see them fairly often, it is rare they are both here at the same time.

It was a wonderful meal and I am very thankful for many things: Jesus, salvation through his blood, my husband, my children, my house, my health...

We are blessed.

These weeks in pictures

I found a toad or a frog.  Toad, I think. Isn't he cute?

Sometimes, often, the sky is beautiful.

We had a couple of weeks of unseasonably warm weather and then it snowed some, which made the younger kids very happy!

Sarah had a birthday! This is a plushie that my parents bought her.  She loves it.

This is Opal, one of our "kittens".  I have been worried about her because she is super timid and nervous, especially because we have neighbor dogs who come over sometimes and terrorize our cats. She kept refusing to go on the porch which is where the food is. So anyway, she has moved in with Naomi and Lydia.

Kevin put in a new door in our sun room!  It was a BIG job but it is almost done now.

In other news, Isaac has now launched into that part of adulthood where he drives himself to his doctor and dental appointments.  It is awesome.  One of the challenges of my life has been hauling 9 kids to and from medical appointments. Now I only have to haul 6 kids.  It really is easier.

Also, Isaac is doing very well with school.  He is in engineering and that is hard work, but he is organized and diligent and managing well.  We are proud of him.

Highlights in my Hair

I went to a real life hairdresser place yesterday and a friend of mine gave me red highlights. This is a big deal for me as I just haven't bothered with such things in decades.  I had kids and I was busy and...

Anyway, I really like it.  I think it looks good.

Joint Interests with the Kids

One of the oddball things about having SO many children is how they have different interests and I keep having fun when I connect with one of them about something.

The big boys are watching lots of movies now; they are 18 and 19 and mature enough for some heavier stuff.  So far they seem to like the same movies that I like, which is fun.  I am super picky about movies.  I am annoyingly picky about movies. I dislike 10 movies for every one I love. So yeah.

I hope for their sake they aren't quite as picky, but it is fun saying, Hey, how about THAT movie and they watch it and like it.  That has been happening a lot.

A week ago or so Miriam told me she was watching a youtube episode about a scientist who tried to fake finding a high atomic number element. I thought that sounded interesting so, with her help, looked it up and watched it all.  The man making the program calls himself BobbyBroccoli for some reason.

It. Was. Awesome!

That's the link, if you care.  It was sciency, but it was also psychological, and historical and WOW!  So so so cool!

BobbyBroccoli also made an elaborate program about a man named Schon who almost won a Nobel Prize on totally faked research!!!!!!!!

Like, recently!  20 years ago!!  WOW!!!!!!!

BobbiBroccoli has a great narrator voice and his images explaining the science are awesome.

It was so fun geeking out, and especially geeking out with Miriam!  I learned quite a bit about nuclear reactions. You would think I would know all that but honestly, I don't; as a materials scientist, I know more than most about the nucleus of atoms, but I know a LOT about electrons and bonding. That's my jam.

Anyway, I have lots in common with the kids, and lots of differences.  I am not an artist, unlike the six girls, but they can, at least, talk to each other!

I can talk about introversion and cats with Naomi, kids and cats and hair dye with Lydia, movies with the boys, and so on and so forth.

It is a blessing!

IM MISLBL

We have had yet another illness, which is so so so tedious, and Rose has been, by far, the sickest.

For a few days she was hacking and coughing so badly that she couldn't really talk.  She is now reading and writing (a little) so she took to writing phonetic spelled messages.

Which frankly I think is both brilliant and adorable.

Yesterday she stopped coughing so much and started throwing up.  Joy.  Poor darling; you know she is not feeling well when she lies, half asleep, in a miserable heap on the couch with a bowl in case she throws up again.

Last night she slept pretty well and this morning, while she hasn't been very hungry, she is far livelier and her stomach has settled. She had been drinking a lot so isn't dehydrated. She isn't coughing as much. So I think the worst is over, thankfully!!

Others of us got a little sick but not nearly as badly.  I did test for COVID and it was negative. One would HOPE that after having it a month ago, we wouldn't get it again, but I just wanted to be sure.

So we are on the mend.
